SOUTH JORDAN CITY GAINS NATIONAL RECOGNITION

SOUTH JORDAN, UT – South Jordan City has recently been designated as a leader in government innovation by the Alliance for Innovation, an internationally recognized nonprofit association of local governments.

In 2006, South Jordan created a 20-year financial sustainability forecasting model, which is rare—if not unheard of—at the local government level. The model helps elected and city officials see the long-term effects of the decisions they make today and provides a framework for discussion on how to create a sustainable community in the future. In June 2008, South Jordan City officials will present their experience at the Alliance for Innovation’s Annual Transforming Local Governments (TLG) Conference in Greenville, SC.

South Jordan was selected from over 90 case studies across the nation. The city was chosen for its demonstrated creativity and leadership in redefining the conventional style of local governance. Not only is the model dynamic and computer-based, but it was designed to be easily updated by staff each year. Because the model was built and maintained “in-house,” there was no external cost for this remarkable, cutting edge tool.

The presentation entitled “Back to the Future: The Best way to Predict the Future is to Create it,” will showcase South Jordan’s efforts to create a long-term financial model and the management culture that supports it. The city’s goal is to help other municipalities join South Jordan’s vision and passion for creating a sustainable future.
